2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Transition Follows Poor Response
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming initial reveal last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a more defined vision.
The president noted that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to satisfy community desires.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
The news echoes a comparable move taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the entire message from Ismailer's announcement:
Dear Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative designers we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to persist.”
Through your commitment and adaptability, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s the game testing phase was informative. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the need for a more distinct identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the criticism to heart and revamped the title with a renewed vision - one that’s positioned to achieve its ambition to our audience.
Our confidence in this project increases every day. To advance the incredible development you’ve made, I’m excited to announce the new hire as the incoming Studio Head of the team. After a period of talks, Ben starts with us on next week.
His guidance and background in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years developing and overseeing some of the most popular franchises in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.
Please join me in receiving him in the coming days. We are all looking forward to continue witnessing the progress of the game in the time to follow.
David
Experience of the Incoming Head
Brinkman presently holds the position of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, prior to that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Information and Vision
The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 together with a community playtest. Then, 31st Union described the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the official summary states. "Challenge the opponents with fresh skills, challenges, and obstacles that shift every session. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively aim high, gamble everything, and hope your team can secure victory? The choice is in your hands."
Project Ethos has not yet received an confirmed debut schedule or consoles, but enthusiasts can look forward to more updates as development progresses.
