Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.
This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the potential of the former president's transfer to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, leading him to implement a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that he be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
He was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.
The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. Lula was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brasília.
The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
